If your Oura Ring 4 seems to glow continuously against your skin throughout the day, the ring’s optical sensors are working overtime. On the Oura Ring 4, this is driven by the Smart Sensing architecture, which dynamically switches between 18 distinct sensor pathways to capture daytime heart rate, live heart rate, and daytime stress. If the green light never turns off, the ring is either actively tracking a workout session, compensating for a loose fit, or dealing with poor blood flow in your fingers.
Quick Answer
A persistent green light usually means Daytime Stress tracking or a background workout is actively reading your pulse. If you are sitting quietly and the light stays on without stopping, the ring is likely struggling to get a clean pulse signal; rotate the ring so the sensor bumps sit against the palm side of your finger and ensure a snug fit.
Device / Signal Snapshot
- Affected Hardware: Oura Ring 4 (and Oura Ring Gen 3).
- Active Components: Green photoplethysmography (PPG) LEDs (daytime pulse), red LEDs (blood oxygen/SpO2), and infrared LEDs (resting heart rate and temperature).
- Severity: Low system risk, but increases battery consumption.
- Battery Impact: Constant sensor illumination can noticeably reduce battery life between charges.
What Is Actually Happening?
Older smart rings relied on fixed sensor positions. If the ring rotated around your finger during the day, the optical sensors could lose direct contact with the digital arteries on the sides and underside of your finger, resulting in missing data.

To solve this, the Oura Ring 4 introduced Smart Sensing:
- 18 Sensor Pathways: Instead of firing a single set of lights, the ring uses an array of photodiodes and multi-wavelength LEDs embedded flush inside the titanium interior.
- Dynamic Path Switching: An onboard algorithm evaluates which of the 18 paths has the best signal-to-noise ratio.
- Adaptive LED Brightness: If your hands are cold, if you have calluses, or if the ring is slightly too loose, light escapes around the edges (light leakage). When this happens, the algorithm instructs the LED driver to increase brightness and extend sampling duration to establish a stable pulse lock.
What Can Keep the Green Light On All Day?
1. Daytime Stress and Live Heart Rate Tracking
The Oura app tracks daytime stress by measuring your heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) every few minutes. If you are moving frequently, the algorithm must keep the green LEDs on longer to filter out movement artifacts from your true heart rhythm.
2. An Active or Unconfirmed Workout
If Automatic Workout Detection (AWD) flags an activity, or if you manually started a Workout Heart Rate (WHR) session, the green LEDs switch to continuous mode. They will remain illuminated until the workout is confirmed, saved, or dismissed in the app.
3. Loose Ring Fit and Rotation
The digital arteries running along your fingers provide the clearest pulse readings. If your ring rotates so the primary sensor cluster sits on top of your finger (over the knuckle bone), the green LEDs will stay illuminated as the ring continually searches for a pulse signal.
4. Cold Temperatures and Vasoconstriction
When your hands are cold, blood vessels in your extremities constrict. This reduces blood volume in your fingers, making it harder for the optical sensor to detect blood volume changes. The ring responds by keeping the LEDs illuminated for extended periods.
If you suspect light leakage is also corrupting your heart rate data during workouts, see Heart Rate “Spiking” at 190 BPM: Detecting and Fixing Light Leakage.
Step-by-Step Fixes to Stop Continuous Illumination
Step 1: Check Active App Features
- Open the Oura App.
- Look at the top of the Home tab for an active Workout Heart Rate card or an unconfirmed workout banner. If present, tap it and select Done or Discard.
- Tap the Heart Rate card to check if Live Heart Rate is currently active. If the app is actively open to this screen, the ring will illuminate its green LEDs continuously while streaming data to your phone. Close the app to end live streaming.
Step 2: Correct Ring Orientation and Sizing
- Inspect the inside of your Oura Ring 4.
- Identify the small sensor cluster area (or the orientation indicator on the bottom exterior of Horizon and Heritage models).
- Rotate the ring so the sensor cluster rests securely on the palm side (underside) of your finger.
- If the ring spins freely without resistance, it is too loose. Try wearing it on an index or middle finger where it fits snugly without pinching.
Step 3: Clean the Sensor Window
Residue from lotion, sunscreen, hand soap, and dead skin cells can form a film over the flush sensor windows, scattering the light beam:
- Wash the ring with mild dish soap and warm water.
- Use a soft microfiber cloth to clean the inner band.
- Dry the ring completely before putting it back on.
For a complete guide to maintaining the optical path, see How to Clean Oura Ring Sensor Bumps for Better Signal Integrity.
Step 4: Perform a Power Cycle (Soft Reset)
If the sensor driver crashes into an active “on” state due to a firmware glitch:
- Place the ring on its powered charging dock.
- Pick up the dock and tap its base firmly on a flat table 6 times.
- The dock LED will briefly flash, power-cycling the ring’s microcontroller and resetting the optical sensor driver.
For complete instructions on this sequence, see The Oura Ring “Soft Reset” Protocol (The 6-Tap Charger Trick).
If the sensor stays on and your battery life drops significantly below normal operating targets, check Oura Ring Gen 4: Why Your Battery Dropped to 2 Days After Firmware 2.7.0. If the green lights pulse continuously while the app fails to record data, see Why Your Oura Ring LED is Flashing Green but the App Shows No Data.
Closing Recommendation
Rotate the ring so the sensor array sits flat against the palm side of your finger, dismiss any active workout cards in the app, and clean the inner band with warm water to prevent the Smart Sensing algorithm from over-compensating for weak signals.
